Mayor Bowser cut the ribbon for the newly expanded and renovated MacFarland on the first day of school. This project transformed the historic MacFarland building into a state-of-the-art dual-language middle school. Initially constructed in 1923, the building features several cutting-edge sustainability elements including photovoltaic panels and a green roofing system and is seeking LEED Gold Certification.
During the ceremony, the Mayor also announced the award of $8.2M in grants to community-based organizations providing afterschool and out-of-school time programming for District youth.
